OES Engine 343

"OES Engine 343 is a Class A rated, Triple Combination, Type I Fire Apparatus. In addition to being a Type I fire apparatus, OES 343 is classified as a Type III Urban Search and Rescue vehicle as well.  With this addition, personnel will be able to effectively operate within a collapsed structure by using tools and equipment provided by the State to dig, lift, cut, or pry materials away to gain access to victims during emergency responses.  For wildland responses, this engine was designed with a shorter overall length and wheelbase to allow for a sharper turning radius and greater maneuverability.  It is also equipped with an auxiliary pump and a greater amount of attack hose lines to be used to complete assignments normally performed by Type III apparatus. It is truly a state-of-the-art piece of firefighting equipment.

The Arcadia Fire Department has had the opportunity to serve the citizens of California and beyond through the State OES mutual aid system for over four decades.  Members of the Arcadia Fire Department have served with great honor and determination for many years on numerous pieces of firefighting apparatus.  Never before have we been so blessed to be able to respond to statewide emergencies on an engine that carries so much personal significance, not only to our own members, but to every firefighter throughout this nation.

The tragic events of September 11, 2001 have forever changed the course of this Nation. Every one of us can remember the exact place and moment in time when we first heard the news and saw the images of the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City.  That day America lost 2,974 people with over 6,000 more injured. Our brothers and sisters in law enforcement lost 60 members of their family. The Fire Department of New York City lost 343 men and women of uniform who so bravely, courageously, and selflessly answered the call that day.  The designator on OES engine 343 is far more than just a number.  That number, 343, reminds us of who we are and embodies everything that we hope to be as firefighters.  It is a source of hope, pride, dedication, inspiration, bravery, and resolve.  This OES engine will serve as a source of inspiration not only to the members who are blessed to ride on it, but to every firefighter who sees this engine on the front lines.  When he are exhausted, over heated, over matched, stretched to our breaking points both physically and mentally,  this engine, 343,  will serve to remind us all to continue to move forward, to keep climbing, to keep fighting, to finish strong, and to answer the call.  The firefighter family throughout this nation is forever bonded by these numbers. We understand their true magnitude and breadth.  The Arcadia Fire Department is truly blessed to be the bearers of something so special.  And so here we are today, just days before the seventh anniversary of the attacks on September 11, 2001, to dedicate this piece of equipment in the name of every man and woman of the FDNY who so freely gave up their lives to save so many; all three hundred and forty three of them. We will continue their fight, we will continue to remember, we will never forget.  Thank you."
